“The stream before the Kamo Shrine.” The “upper” and “lower” Kamo Shrines were important to the Heian court and figure in Murasaki Shikibu’s diary and in the Genji Monogatari. They exist to this day as the Shimigamo and Kamigamo shrines in Kyoto.
